Scalable Performance of FLUENT on NCSA IA-32 Linux Cluster
نویسنده
چکیده
A leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT is ported to the NCSA IA-32 Linux cluster with Myrinet interconnect. Scripts are written to integrate FLUENT with the open-source PBS scheduling system. Scalable performance of FLUENT is benchmarked with two engineering problems from Caterpillar Inc. and Fluent, Inc. A maximum of 64 processors are used to accommodate up to 10 million cells. The Linux cluster computes more than 2.5 times faster than a SGI Origin2000 supercomputing at NCSA. A speed-up of 7 times is observed when 32 processors are used instead of 2. This scalability suggests that cluster computing can substantially shorten design cycles in industrial design processes. Linux clusters provide a promising means of large-scale CFD simulations at an affordable cost.

Using PAPI for hardware performance monitoring on Linux systems
PAPI is a specification of a cross-platform interface to hardware performance counters on modern microprocessors. These counters exist as a small set of registers that count events, which are occurrences of specific signals related to a processor's function. Monitoring these events has a variety of uses in application performance analysis and tuning. The PAPI specification consists of both a st...

A 3.7 teraflops Cray-Dell Linux cluster based on Intel Xeon processors will be installed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center early this summer. It will represent a transition from the T3E line of massively parallel processing systems that served researchers at The University of Texas. Code migration to an IA-32 microarchitecture will benefit from the adoption of new performance-enhancing arc...
متن کاملParallelKnoppix - Rapid Creation of a Linux Cluster for MPI Parallel Processing Using Non-Dedicated Computers
This note describes ParallelKnoppix, a bootable CD that allows creation of a Linux cluster in very little time. An experienced user can create a cluster ready to execute MPI programs in less than 10 minutes. The computers used may be heterogeneous machines, of the IA-32 architecture. When the cluster is shut down, all machines except one are in their original state, and the last can be returned...
متن کاملPrevention of Buffer Overflow Exploits in IA-32 Based Linux
We review four independent modifications, known as OWL, paged-PaX, seg-PaX patches and RSX module, made to the Linux kernel that aim to prevent buffer overflow exploits in IA32-based Linux. We show that two of these modification are ineffective, even though the ideas that they embody are workable. We bring attention to the fact that Linux on IA-32 does not use segmentation wisely. We also discu...
متن کاملinto the strengths and weaknesses of Linux clusters by Stephen Hill 2000
Linux clusters are a relative newcomer to the supercomputing arena, but they are gaining market share at an aggressive rate due to their low price/performance figures. The Hursley High Performance Computing group is in the business of services for IBM’s proprietary clustering system, the Scalable PowerParallel but is having to field an increasing number of requests for information on Linux syst...
